What, why, and how?

What is Nostr

From the nostr-protocol GitHub:

The simplest open protocol that is able to create a censorship-resistant global "social" network once and for all.

Like HTTP or TCP-IP, Nostr is a protocol — not an application or service.

Why Nostr

Social Networking is a crowded space. Each existing option has benefits and costs:

  • Centralized services (Twitter, Facebook, Truth Social)
    • Ease of use for ads and censorship
  • Decentralized or p2p social networks (Mastadon, SSB)
    • Free speech for complicated setup and expensive servers

The nostr protocol enables creation of decentralized and reliable social networks.
